中西文化作为人类文化的不同表现，具有共同的一般人性基础，因而也具有一定程度的共同性。

当苏格拉底遇上孔子，他们的思想有着共同之处。第一，他们都重视道德思想。第二，他们都主张特定的社会秩序。人人要各正其位，各司其职，各尽其责。第三，他们都期望统治者是智慧和德性超群的社会精英。

由此我们可知，在人类智慧的摇篮期，东西方世界中人们的思想胚胎有着极大的相似性，而对这些相似性的分析和认识将更加有助于我们探讨人类文明的渊源。
